Melbourne Bicycle User Group

About Melbourne BUG

Melbourne BUG is a Bicycle User Group for the City of Melbourne municipality. Anyone who lives in, cycles through or is interested in cycling in the CBD, Carlton, North Melbourne, West Melbourne, East Melbourne, Docklands or on St Kilda Rd is welcome to join or contribute to Melbourne BUG. We currently concentrate on campaigning for better cycling conditions but we hope to have social rides, skills workshops and other events as well, depending on interest and organisational enthusiasm.

Melbourne BUG was established over a decade ago as a representative body for cyclists who live and/or ride in the City of Melbourne. In 2003 it was revitalised, with new convenors and over sixty new members. Our membership is diverse including city workers and residents, students of various city educational institutions and commuters who ride through the municipality.

Mission

Melbourne BUG will work to improve the cycling environment of the City of Melbourne through our own campaigns, by supporting the efforts of individuals, by helping Melbourne City Council implement their bike plan, by assisting the campaigning of Bicycle Victoria and by collaborating with any other concerned party.

Vision

Melbourne BUG believes cycling is a very appropriate form of transport within the City of Melbourne and we want to see it further facilitated and grow as a transport choice.

Specifically we want:
  • Recognition of cycling by Melbourne City Council as a viable and desirable transport mode within the municipality
  • Commitment by Melbourne City Council to increase funding for cycling's development every year
  • Cycling to become ten per cent of all trips in the municipality by 2010
  • Swanston St to become more bicycle-friendly
  • Complete connectivity for all north-south and east-west major cycling routes through the CBD
  • Expansion of the network of on-road lanes throughout the municipality
  • Completion of off-road path connectivity such as Northbank (opposite Southbank) and Manningham St bridge in Parkville
  • Improvement of the quality of off-road paths throughout the municipality
  • Bicycles allowed to use Gardens paths as shared zones
